Usually, once a week, we treat ourselves to a dinner out. This week, the marina organized a small bus to transport about 14 of us to the local Red Barn restaurant. We were assured that the food would be plentiful and very good.
We were not disappointed! There was a line up throughout the evening, and this was undeniably one of the best 'southern' meals we have enjoyed. This restaurant was something that we would have normally driven right past - nothing to look at and somewhat 'run down'. But a favourite of the locals. I had a great fried chicken sandwich & fries, and Eric enjoyed a trout dinner cooked to perfection. With wine at $3 a glass (I had 3), our bill came to $34.
The company of fellow boaters was most enjoyable as we shared plans for travelling downstream and tidbits of information to make the trip smoother. Sadly, most of these friends left this morning to head down towards Mobile Bay. We have decided to hold up here in Demopolis for the better part of November. We are in a beautiful marina with a pool, laundry facilities and a courtesy car. We're happy to stay well away from any late storms that may hit the gulf.
Our friends from Thunder Bay (Nick & Rachel), are pictured on the far left. We have been travelling on and off with them since northern Lake Michigan. We enjoyed dinner together last night aboard Catan on the back deck - they brought fajitas and we served frikadiller (large Danish meatballs) & salad ... and chocolate cake. And of course, there was wine. We had a really nice night. I expect we will meet up with them again before crossing the gulf in early December. They are planning to hold up in Mobile Bay before the crossing.
We continue to count our blessings and enjoy each day as it unfolds. Ironically, Jill, Ben & Orson, as well as Jessica & Lessie are having a fun time at the lake house this weekend. First time I have had a bit of homesickness knowing they are there and we are here. Such is life, and tomorrow is another day full of new adventure!
